Artist: Kristi Jensen
Exhibition: Fuse: Join to Form a Single Entity
Media: Metal, Wire
Gallery: CSULB School of Art, Gatov Gallery West and East
About the Artist: Mainly working with metals now, Kristi Jensen is pursuing her BFA in metal and jewelry after starting as a sculpting major. She eventually wants to make a career out of working with metal, most likely in jewelry. In her free time she likes to watch the Walking Dead and read. Jensen now lives in Venice.
Formal Analysis: Every piece that Jensen had on display had beautiful curved lines; nothing was jagged or displeasing to look at. The colors of the metal were very natural, focusing the eye on its purity. None of the titles were too clever or long.
Content Analysis: Personally, I am not the biggest fan of jewelry so this week’s visit to the galleries was not mum favorite. After asking Jensen some questions, I really came to appreciate her craft. She described the feeling of pride she gets from working with metals as opposed to fibers or knitting. Jensen mentioned that she is more inspired by the process than any ulterior motivation.
Experience: As I previously mentioned, I am not very big on jewelry. That being said, some of Jensen’s other work was very intriguing (such as the wall installation and the large vase type piece). I also appreciated that she let the material stay in its natural form.
